Mauritius

The island of Mauritius is famous for its superb marlin fishing. Big game anglers from all over the world make the pilgrimage here to test themselves against the blue, black and striped marlin that swim in these waters.

Tuna, sailfish, wahoo, dorado and various species of shark are amongst the other attractions for the angler. The fishing is good from November to April - May, but the very best time for blue marlin is February.

The Fishing

The fishing is from the Black River district which is one of the very best areas: granders - fish over 1000 lbs are landed here every year. It is possible to start fishing a mere 10-15 minutes after sailing out of the harbour. Blues are the most common marlin species, but a few black and striped marlin together with sailfish are also caught. A number of species of shark, bonito and dorado also feature regularly in the catch. All fish are brought ashore and weighed, regardless of size. The big game boats have all necessary tackle on board; rods, reels, lures etc., and are included in the charter. 

Accommodation

Our clients stay in one of the hotels we work with in the Black River district. On day you don't spend fishing you can simply relax by the pool or take part in one of the many other activities offered by the hotel. These include; windsurfing, glass-bottomed boat tours, tennis, snorkelling and kajaking. There are also scuba diving schools and you can take an internationally recognised diving qualification here.

In the evenings the hotels offer great dining which are often accompanied by local entertainment. Your hotel will be happy to prepare you a delicious packed lunch for when you go fishing, is you can order it the day before. If you would like to explore more of the island 'under your own steam' we recommend that you ask your hotel to arrange a taxi for you. The taxi drivers make excellent tour guides. The cost of such a trip will vary according to its length and content.
