Big game fishing for billfish in one of the world's warm tropical oceans need not only be for the rich! Zihuatanejo is not only one of the very best places to catch sailfish anywhere on the planet, but big game fishing here is also great value for money.

Offshore, Zihuatanejo's sailfish fishery is absolutely world class. In the peak season for sails, between November and Febuary, catches of 4 to 5 sailfish per boat per day are not unusual! But there is much more to Zihuatanejo than sailfish, depending on the water temperatures, dorado, wahoo and yellowfin tuna can all feature in catches, while some lucky fishermen may even experience the thrill of fighting a blue or black marlin.

Fishing from a super panga, the mainstay of the Zihuatanejo fishing fleet, is not just cheaper than fishing from one of the big sportsfishing cruisers, normally associated with big game fishing, but also gives you more turns on strike as you will be sharing the boat only with one other angler.

These 8m boats are fast, seaworthy, and provide an exciting platform to fish from as you feel very close to the action. They are fully equipped with out riggers, down riggers. radio, GPS and safety equipment. Good quality tolling tackle is also included, and usually when fishing offshore, you will be fishing a spread of 4 or 5 rods.

The inshore fishing is a seperate chapter to itself! Roosterfish, one of the hardest fighting fish in the sea, is the most prized catch, but other species such as jack crevalle, bonito and Mexican needlefish will all provide excellent sport on light tackle. Our skippers can also provide all the tackle necessary for inshore fishing, but it can be worthwhile bringing your own gear.

Saltwater flyfishing is growing in popularity here. Both bluewater fly fishing for sailfish or casting close to rocks and cliffs inshore can be tremendously exciting. However, if you wish to do fly fish you will need to bring your own equipment.

The ocean off Zihuatanejo is not just alive with gamefish; while out fishing you also have a great chance of encountering dolphins, turtles, whales, orcas and rays, together with masses of seabirds.

Zihuatanejo is also a great place just to kick back and relax after a days big game fishing! There are plenty of restaurants, cafes and bars to choose from, almost all featuring fresh seafood and local Mexican dishes. It also has good shopping for local crafts, silver, clothes, fine tequilas and Cuban cigars.

Why not bring along the non-fishing part of the family - sunbathing on palm fringed beaches, snorkelling and diving on coral reefs and swimming with dolphins are just some of the activites available in Zihuatanejo and the surrounding area.
