Have wished for your own cabin out in the wilds of Alaska? Atlantik travel can now offer you the chance to stay in a cosy fishing cabin in the midst of the Alaskan wilderness.
The cabins are simple, but have a fantastic location close to the majestic River Talkeentna. The huts are sited where Fish Creek runs joins the Talkeetna, a few hundred meters from Chunilna Creek. You can start fishing just infront of the door to your hut, but it is best is you are prepared to do a bit of walking on this tour.
Chunila Creek is a smallish, stable, clearwater river with very good runs of king and coho salmon, together with smaller numbers of sockeye, chum and pink salmon. In additionaly there are brook trout, rainbow trout and a few grayling in the river. The river is ideal for fly fishing, but it is also well suited for spin fishing. Fish Creek is a smaller river that runs past the front of the huts. It has a good run of coho, red and chum salmon, but no significant numbers of king salmons. If you are targetting king salmon then you should be prepared to fish in the much larger River Talkeetna, in the confluences of the Fish and Chunilna Creek or walk up the Chunilna Creek (1-2 km).
Our local agent will be there to meet you in the airport and it will be possible to stop and shop for groceries etc, before you are sailed out to the cabins. On arrival each group will be given an introductory guideing session (2 - 3 hours) by a local Alaska guide. The last night of the tour will be spent in a hotel in the town of Talkeetna Guests should be aware that it is possible to meet other anglers when fishing near this confluence (especially in the king salmon season), but you can easily find more solitude by walking upstream along either the Chunilna or Fish Creek.
The powerful king salmon, which typically weigh between 10-20kg but can reach weights of up to 35kg, start their ascent of the river in mid -June, and the season is open until 13th July. During the first days of August the mercurial coho salmon begin to appear, and at this time there will also be sockeye, pink and the feisty chum salmon in the river. It is simply a wonderful experience to stay in the midst of the Alaskan wilderness, and in addition to seeing eagles, moose and beavers you will have a great chance of seeing bears during your stay, as both black and brown bears are present in the area. You will of course be briefed on bear safety during your introductory guiding session.
The huts are managed in conjunction with Chunilna Creek Lodge, that lies further up the river. Therefore it will always be possible to contact a local guide (mobile telephones have signal coverage) if any problems arise during your stay. It is also possible to hire a jetboat to take you up the river or to the town of Talkeetna
