Salmon and trout fishing Canoe expedition on the Lainio River, Swedish Lapland

There are a lot of ways to experience Lapland with a fishing pole. One of the absolute best is in a canoe, sliding down the river looking for the fish of your dreams.

200 km north of the polar circle we offer a unique drift-fishing trip in the wilderness. Here you will experience outstanding trout and salmon fishing while the midnight sun dances and the reindeer grass at the bank.

The fishery                                                                                                                                                                The salmon ascent in the Torne River system has increased significantly the later years. The Lainio River, which is a branch of The Torne River, has seen amazing salmon fishing the last couple of years. The salmon in Lainio are generally huge and there are some giants among weighing up to 15 kg.

The trout and grayling fishery is a chapter in itself. Graylings overrun the place and it is not unusual to catch graylings measuring 50 to 60 cm. A healthy stock of brown trout can also be found, most of them measuring 35 to 50 cm, but fish weighing two kg are caught every year. Moreover there are chances of catching char.

The trip                                                                                                                                                                       From the small airport near Kiruna you fly into the wilderness in a helicopter or a hydroplane. From here you sail down the river on your own. The river is perfect for canoes. We use rafting canoes, which is a mix of a canoe and a rubber surface. The rubber canoes are easy to steer and almost impossible to turn over. Therefore special skills are not demanded.

You are on the river for seven days, but the distance can be covered quicker. So you have a lot of time to stop and fish. It is possible to let the current take care of the sailing since it is very strong most of the time.

Tackle and technique                                                                                                                                                  It is a good idea to bring tackle for trout and salmon fishing. The river is suited for fly-fishing and a two-hand pole can turn out to be an advantage when fishing for salmon.
